Your life is made of stories — and at any given moment, your mind is running countless threads.

The Work

What is Archetypal
Advising?

Your mind is a story-making machine. At any given moment it is running stories about who you are, what you deserve, and where you are headed — in your conscious mind and beneath it.

Left unchecked, those stories run the show. Archetypal Advising uses mythology, depth psychology, and narrative metaphysics to help you actually see them — and work with them.

The Problem

Unchecked stories slow you down, sabotage you, or leave you reaching for meaning your mind cannot find — a hollowness that no external success seems to fill.

The Approach

Archetypes are the building blocks of all human story. By surfacing the archetypal patterns at work in your life, we free up the processing power your mind has been using to run them unconsciously.

The Result

Clarity. A renewed sense of purpose and connection. The tools to track your own story — so you are living it, instead of it living you.

The Name

Why 'Some Fool'?

In the Tarot the Fool is card zero. Emptied of expectations, unencumbered by the past, only through such ‘empty-headedness’ is there a hope to take the leap into a new journey. Often it is our ‘wisdom’ that holds us back, and nowhere do we feel more like experts than in the stories of our own lives.

The Fool

The only hope that you and I have at making Archetypal Advising successful is to willingly choose to be The Fool. For when we are freed from our certainty the world becomes nothing but possibility.

The Process

The Journey

Phase One

Scouting the Territory

A 90-minute conversation designed to turn over the stones of your past and your mind. What is hiding beneath them? The questions are crafted to reveal not just what you remember — but how you remember it.

Between sessions, I draw your Narrative Map and write the opening pages of your Personal Mythology — a physical record of the symbols, archetypes, and storylines shaping how you see the world.

Phase Two

Charting a Course

The second 90-minute session moves into the present. Using your map and mythology as foundation, we surface what story-material is currently active — with the help of Tarot as a symbolic tool, not a fortune-teller.

We close the stories that drain you, identify the ones worth carrying forward, and create Landmarks: small daily practices that anchor the new stories into lived experience.

Ongoing

Ongoing Advising

Most people choose to continue. Monthly or bi-monthly sessions to track your progress, adjust your landmarks, and navigate the new terrain as it emerges. Includes dream analysis, synchronicity tracking, and an annual review of your Personal Mythology.

Ryan Van Bussum
Who I Am

Some Fool,
properly introduced.

On the night my grandfather died, my family was gathered around a poker table. My grandfather — a man named Bill — was dealt Wild Bill’s Dead Man’s Hand. He had cancer and had chosen the Death with Dignity path, so his passing wasn’t a surprise, but the coincidence was enough to silence the room.

That moment crystallized something I had been circling for years. For the better part of a decade I had been moving through mythology, semiotics, depth psychology, philosophy, and the hard sciences, trying to understand something I couldn’t quite name — the role that story plays in our lives, and the way meaning has a strange habit of showing up uninvited.

That search eventually led me to Archetypal Advising.

I’m not a licensed therapist, and I have no credentials on my wall. What I have is ten years of obsessive, self-directed study and a genuine belief in what this work does. The techniques and frameworks at the heart of Archetypal Advising have made a real difference in my own life, and in the lives of others who have taken the time to examine the narratives, symbols, and patterns shaping how they see the world — and who they believe themselves to be.

Ryan's Archetypal Advising was one of the most transformative and insightful experiences I've ever had. He understood me more deeply than anyone else in my life at that time, and his guidance gave me clarity and perspective that proved invaluable for setting expectations about my future.

FAQs

No. I am not a therapist and this is not a clinical service. It's a process for understanding the stories your mind is telling so you can work with them intentionally. Many find it complementary to therapy; many come with no therapeutic background at all.
Not at all. Tarot here is a tool — a compendium of human symbolic experience useful for surfacing what is already present in your own mind. You don't need to believe in anything. You only need to be willing to look.
Skepticism is an asset here. I have a background in the hard sciences and built this framework to withstand scrutiny precisely because I needed it to. Bring your doubts. We'll look at them together.
Anyone navigating a transition, searching for purpose, stuck in patterns they can't break, or simply curious about the stories shaping their life. The work is particularly resonant during times of change — but the ongoing upkeep is valuable in the quieter stretches too.
You don't need to be in crisis. Some of the most productive work happens with people who are doing well by most measures but sense a deeper layer they haven't yet accessed.
Two 90-minute sessions, typically one to two weeks apart. The time between them is part of the process — it allows the material from the first session to settle while I prepare your Narrative Map and Personal Mythology.
